Come with a dream and Maharashtra will fulfill it. The
picturesque state in Western India, with a 720 km coastline dotted by rugged forts
standing as mute witnesses down the ages to the march of warrior kings, foreign
trading vessels and invaders from across the seas.
Historically the main
centre of the Maratha empire, which successfully defied the might of the Mughals
under the fearless rule of Chhatrapati Shivaji. Many of the inland and coastal
forts of Maharashtra are a legacy of Shivaji's rule.
The capital of
Maharashtra, Mumbai owes its name to Mumba Devi, the guardian deity of the city.
It also happens to be the film center of India. A lot of excitement is because
Bombay is "Bollywood", the 2nd largest producer of films in the
world.
Maharashtra's greatest treasures are its extraordinary cave
temples and monasteries. The finest of all are found near Aurangabad. From the
second century BC, this region was an important centre of Buddhism ; artificial
caves were excavated to shelter monks, and the finest artists sculpted
magnificent cathedral like halls for congregational worship. Discover the
timeless tapestry of coalescing faiths. Ajanta, a world heritage site, where in
the scrap of a hill, monks have painted frescoes of unrivalled hues and
emotions. Ellora whose Kailas Temple is the largest monolithic rock-cut temple
in the world.
