Punjab, as the name suggests,
is the land of five rivers. Made up of two Persian words 'Panj'
meaning five and 'Aab' meaning water and the province of
Punjab is crossed
by five major rivers. These five rivers being - Indus, Ravi, Beas,
Sutlej and Sarasvati. These rivers are the reason of making Punjab
the richest and most fertile province in India. These rivers also
pose a danger to farmers - flooding and changing course when swollen
with waters from the Himalayas. The state is bound by Pakistan on
west, Jammu and Kashmir
in the north, Himachal
Pradesh on the north east and Haryana and Rajasthan
on the south.
Punjab, the number one modern
state of India has an amazing wealth of old and new tourist
destinations. Punjab is a traveler’s dream,
gourmet’s paradise, shopper’s delight, a sportsman's inspiration, a
musician 's Mecca, a dancer's delight. Punjab is
the land of pilgrimage, archaeological digs (stone age to 12th
century AD ), palaces, museums and historical sites. Sword arm of
India, Punjab
is freedom fighter's home.
The major city in
Punjab is Amritsar, the holy
city of the Sikhs. Chandigarh
, a new planned city, was conceived and built in the 1950s
to serve as the capital of new Punjab. No one has ever gone back
from the Punjab without leaving a part of the self behind and taking
a part of the Punjab
with him.
